Robinette’s is a family-owned business that has been selling outdoor sporting equipment and apparel since 1983. This means they have seen a lot of young hunters grow up. They have a large selection of brand names that hunters and sportsmen can rely on. Robinette’s is a small business whose team truly appreciates swapping stories and helping people find the right gear so they can get the most out of what they buy. Robinette’s goal is to provide knowledgeable and friendly service to every customer.

In a long-standing, family-owned specialty retail shop like Robinette’s, an accounting intern gets valuable, hands-on exposure across the full small-business financial cycle. Unlike a large corporate firm where interns often touch only one ledger account, a local retail setting allows a student to see how inventory, daily point-of-sale (POS) transactions, vendor invoicing, and cash flows directly connect.

Responsibilities and Career Competencies:

• Complete high-ticket, serialized inventory that requires rigorous tracking. (CSD, CT, T) • Reconcile physical floor counts against the inventory ledger, calculate Cost of Goods Sold, monitor shrinkage, and analyze holding costs for seasonal outdoor cycles (e.g., fall hunting seasons vs. off-season stock). (CSD, CT, T) • Match purchase orders, receiving slips, and supplier invoices (three-way matching) across outdoor and manufacturing distributors. (C, TW, CSD, CT, T) • Track vendor payment terms, early-payment discounts, and freight/shipping allocations. (C, P, CSD) • Audit daily cash drawer balances, credit card merchant batches, and electronic payments against register reports. (C, P, CSD, T) • Reconcile special retail transactions such as customer deposits, trade-ins, service/repair labor fees (e.g., bow tuning), and layaway liability accounts. (CSD, C, TW, P, T) • Prepare preliminary schedules for monthly state retail sales tax filings. (CSD, CT, T) • Ensure proper tax classification across varying product types. (CSD, CT, T) • Assist supervisor with basic margin analysis by product line. (C, TW, P, CSD) • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and draft simple variance reports (comparing actual revenue/expenses to prior years or quarterly budgets). (C, TW, CSD, CT, T) • Other duties shared among employees, such as organizing and light cleaning. (TW, P)

Competencies/Skills: Communication (C), Teamwork (TW), Professionalism (P), Career & Self Development (CSD), Critical Thinking (CT), Community Transformation (CTR), Leadership (L), Technology (T)

Qualifications:

• Enrolled full-time and in good standing at UPIKE. • Interest in business and accounting. • Students with coursework, experience, or academic interest in accounting. • Preferred interest in and knowledge of outdoor sports and types of inventory supplied.
