ABOUT THIS JOB : CarMax Accounting is seeking curious, motivated students who are passionate about business and eager to develop their leadership and professional skills. This 10-week, project-based summer internship at our Home Office in Richmond, Virginia provides hands-on experience in a corporate accounting environment, offering meaningful work, exposure to Accounting leaders, and opportunities to build relationships across the organization.
WHAT YOU’LL DO - ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The work our interns perform is consistent with the work performed by our full-time associates, including real-time projects and issues that our teams are actively trying to solve. There will be opportunities to contribute to projects across a variety of accounting functions, which may include accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, corporate accounting, fixed assets, financial reporting, etc. Whenever possible, interns will be paired with projects that align with both business needs and their individual interests and development goals. Responsibilities will include a mix of independent work and collaborative, cross-functional projects, and may include interactions with customers and/or vendors.
WHAT YOU’LL GAIN - PURPOSE OF THE ROLE : This internship is designed to provide students with meaningful professional experience while supporting the CarMax Accounting Department through a variety of projects and operational activities. Interns will gain exposure to multiple areas of Accounting while developing technical skills, business acumen, and professional relationships. Ideal candidates are those who are interested in: • Hands-on experience working on real Accounting projects • Contributing to the goals that support our accounting initiatives • Contributing ideas and opinions to support our continuous improvement environment • Developing technical and business acumen • Building relationships with leaders and associates across the organization • Professional development opportunities designed to build business and leadership skills
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS : • A rising junior or rising senior in a 4-year business degree program (accounting preferred but not required) with an understanding of basic accounting terminology • A history of achievement and aptitude demonstrated by a strong GPA, and/or other recognition such as scholarships, awards, or honor societies • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel required (e.g., filtering, v-lookups, subtotals, shortcuts, etc.) • Requires mathematical skills that would be gained from a typical undergraduate accounting or business curriculum • Familiarity with financial, accounting, or enterprise systems (such as Oracle or Workday) is a plus, but not required
Work Authorization: • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be considered for this specific role.
Work Location: Associates will work from our Corporate Headquarters located in Richmond, VA, which has a Hybrid work arrangement in office 4 days a week.
The hourly rate for this position is:
$23.00 - $35.00 Benefits:
Except as otherwise required by state law, CarMax Associates are entitled to the following paid sick, vacation, and holiday time.
Associates that are considered full-time hourly or commission/incentive eligible: • To earn up to 48 hours of sick time per year accrued on a per pay period basis and between 80 hours and 200 hours per year of vacation time after a 90 day waiting period depending on years of continuous service with the Company. • For 8 hours of pay for each of a total of 6 paid scheduled holidays per year plus 1 floating holiday. If such an Associate does work on a scheduled holiday due to business need, they are eligible for Holiday Premium Pay.
Associates considered full-time salaried are entitled to paid time away with no specified limit as needed for sick, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, floating holiday, etc. subject to manager approval.
