Two completely different clocks

The biggest mistake students make is applying to every industry on the same schedule. Finance and consulting run nearly a full year ahead of the summer they're hiring for. Tech, and most "general" companies, run much closer to the actual start date. Know which clock you're on before you assume you've missed something.

Finance & consulting

Investment banking, private equity, MBB-style consulting

Jun – Aug (prior yr)

Programs open early

Summer programs, "sophomore" leadership programs, and networking events for rising juniors start. If you want a junior-summer internship, this is when the earliest doors open.

Sep – Oct (prior yr)

Most deadlines close

The bulk of application deadlines. Most bulge-bracket banks and top consulting firms close junior-summer applications by mid-October, a full 8+ months before the internship starts.

Oct – Dec (prior yr)

Interviews & offers

First-round and superday interviews happen. Offers for the most competitive programs are often out before winter break.

Jan – Mar (start yr)

A smaller second wave

Roles that didn't fill in the fall reopen. Worth watching if you're starting late, but the pool is smaller.

Tech & software

Aug – Oct

Applications open early

Large tech companies open applications for the following summer. This is the best time to apply if you want your pick of roles.

Nov – Jan

Startups join in

Mid-size and Series B–D startups post more actively as headcount plans finalize.

Feb – Apr

The biggest wave

Most tech internship postings across company sizes go live in this window. If you only apply once a year, do it now.

May – Jun

Rolling & last-minute

Mostly smaller companies backfilling a role that fell through. Worth checking even this late.

Everything else

Nonprofits, government, research, most other industries

Outside finance and tech, timelines are far more rolling. Government internships, federal agencies especially, often run their own separate cycles with early-fall deadlines, so check individually. Nonprofits and research labs frequently post as needs come up, sometimes just 6-8 weeks before the role starts, which means it's worth checking back monthly rather than assuming you missed a single window.

If you think you're already behind

You're probably not. Even inside the "early" industries, a real fraction of offers get declined every year and reopen in the spring. And outside finance and consulting, rolling means rolling. A strong application in March can still land a great summer.
